Aidan fiddled with the ring in his pocket. The silver band he had had made for someone so close to him. However, he was riddled with thoughts on if this was a good idea or not. There was this looming shadow overhead that was not going anywhere. His father had cast a large shadow that had left the kingdom in chaos. Then there was Declan, who was standing next to the shadow that was their father. He had hoped that his brother would understand but he was king now. Being king came with rules that sometimes, and often, trumped family’s feelings. It didn’t make him feel better about the whole thing though. He was worried that this would be the start of the downfall for him.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to do it. Aidan had known that his soulmate was by his side from a young age. He had known that his other half was a man since he was very young. However, now that his father had passed, he was left with feeling that he was disappointing him. Did he have to change that part of himself to make the rest of the world happy? Did he have to settle down with a woman, and feel this emptiness in his heart because he couldn’t be with Galen?

He had stood at the grave of his mother and father those months ago, right before he left Faldor. He had asked them both what he should do. His mother would have supported him. His father…he knew that he would gain the disappointing stare. As he left the grave he ran into Marcus who had supported his choice of who to love. He had told him their lights were tangled and that was how he knew. Funny enough, he trusted Death who had taken those close to him, over his own blood.

Now he stood looking out across the farmland, with the crooked crown on his head, and a silver ring burning a hole in his pocket. That was his answer. He was meant to be with Galen and while it may not be a public thing he could do it in secret. Taking the crown off he placed it next to his bed. Shedding the clothing of a prince he put on those he normally wore to help those under him. The ring he put in his pocket and headed out to the stables. Telling the stable boy to get two horses ready he gave the young man a pat on his back. Finding the messenger he asked for him to get a message to Galen to meet him down by the river. Once that was done he took one of the horses and told the stable boy to give the other to Galen when he came.

He rushed down to the river. He tied the horse under the tree and waited for his love to get there. How much of his father was he destined to become? How much of his mother was in him? He hoped his mother won out as he was about to make a move that was probably considered scandalous. Aidan didn’t care. His messy mop of hair blew in the wind as he stood waiting.

This was his path, and his eldest brother could take it as it came. He had other ways to make connections and keep wars from spilling into the borders. There was a girl in his home he was promised to and they had called it off together. She would remain here and act as a voice when it came to decisions about what to do. It was helpful to have her there as another view and voice.

As he heard the other horse coming he turned to face who it was. Galen, his knight, his best friend, and his soulmate.

Galen couldn’t help but feel that Aidan was up to something. The messenger had arrived while Hope was in the middle of a tantrum. She had reached an age where she would throw a fit when she didn’t get her way. Today was one of those days. Galen had made the “wrong” breakfast and Hope wasn’t having it. She was throwing a tantrum, screaming and crying. She wouldn’t stop and wouldn’t allow anyone to try to calm her down. So, Galen was just letting her cry. He was not going to give into her whims and her every single want. She needed to learn how to be reasonable and she wasn’t going to do that if he spoiled her anytime she cried. Tough love. That is what he knew his father would have called it. He was practicing it now.

Naturally, a messenger from Aidan always had Galen on high alert. The prince was his heart and soul. He was one of the few people, aside from his siblings, that Galen loosened up around. Yet, when he was called for unexpectedly, he worried. In the past, an unexpected call led to learning bad things had happened or were going to happen. However, to his knowledge things had been going smoothly lately. He couldn’t imagine what could happen prompting Aidan to send a messenger for him, not to come himself.

Still, Galen moved into action immediately. He gave his eldest brother and sister (still home) orders to let Hope cry herself out and then to make sure she ate something. He made sure they were aware of what chores needed to be done and who needed to do them. Then, he left it all to them, heading to the stables to get the horse Aidan left him and head to where Aidan asked to meet.

Once there, he smiled as Aidan turned and raised his eyebrows in question. “I do hope that we are here for a good reason and that you are not about to share bad news….we have had too much bad news before now.” Galen stated, his voice soft and demonstrating a rare tender and gentleness, a gentleness reserved for Aidan and Aidan alone.

Aidan knew this was probably going to be a terrible idea with his eldest brother. He just couldn’t marry someone he didn’t love. There were other ways to unite another kingdom. There were other ways he could do such a thing. He wasn’t going to become something that he couldn’t stand. If that meant some turmoil then that is what it meant. He had stood by Declan when two other brother’s didn’t. He stood by him and made sure he got the right thing. He could have easily told him to stand aside while he took the crown. He didn’t.

While he knew he couldn’t marry Galen, that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to make the commitment of this moment. He wasn’t going to lose this. He would ask but he couldn’t go through with the marriage itself till he got the okay. But he could make this choice.

There was his knight. Aidan loved him so much. He was his heart and soul. Yes, Aidan was the prince but he knew where his heart was. Often his heart was the thing making choices. That was something most people knew about him. Heading over he smiled at him. ”Yes, we are here for good reason. Well I do hope it turns out to be good.” He smiled as he talked. Aidan was one that rarely wasn’t smiling.

Taking Galen’s hand he took him back towards the water. ”This place is away from prying eyes and ears. This has to be done alone and this was the only place I could think to do such a thing.” He spoke softly as he turned to face him. Before he said anything else though he leaned in pressing a soft kiss to his lover’s lips. ”I love you.”

Seeing Aidan helped Galen to relax. His initial worry was that something had happened to the prince. However, seeing him whole and in one piece set that fear at ease. In fact, Aidan was smiling like usual. That was a good sign. He was rarely without that beautiful smile on his face and Galen knew the times it was gone had been the worst times for his prince. Still, Galen was curious as to why they were here. What could possibly cause Aidan to call for him so suddenly and to bring him here, away from everything?

Galen nodded and breathed a sigh of relief when Aidan said it should be good. He dismounted from his horse and moved to tie it up near Aidan’s before approaching his prince. “I am sure if you think it is good...it will be good. You know I trust your judgment and you need and deserve something good.” Still, Galen worried. That was what he was known for. Good for Aidan didn’t always mean good for him. Declan was king now and Galen didn’t trust him to be so accepting of their love. He expected him to push for marriage, as Aidan had been engaged to Briar for some time now and while Galen knew they were friends, nothing more, he didn’t trust Declan to ever see it that way. He expected the eldest Charming to seize any opportunity for alliances. He was much like the Charming patriarch was in that way.

“Okay…” Galen raised his eyebrows, clearly not understanding what this could be. Still, he let Aidan lead him closer to the water and nodded. Everything about their relationship and true bond was secret. Still, he couldn’t think of a reason they’d be sitting here like this. He could not come up with a guess as to what this was about. As it was, he didn’t have long to speculate anyway before Aidan was professing his love and pressing a kiss to his lips. He returned it with a rare Galen smile, one reserved soley for Aidan.

“I love you too. Now, are you going to tell me what this is about?”

Well, Aidan knew it was good for them. The rest of the world he was unsure about. Of course he knew he had his youngest brother’s backing, Christian. He wasn’t sure about Adrian yet but he was curious and a little worried about it. As for his two other brothers he wasn’t really sure. Well Tristan at least. Yet, Aidan knew that his lover was worried. It was his job to worry and honestly someone had to worry. Aidan thought with his heart on most things and that left little time to worry about some things. Which was where Galen came in.

”We all need something good. I fear that something wrong will happen in due time, because given the family and the way things go for us, it is just bound to happen.” Basically Aidan had just admitted that being a Charming was a task all in itself. Aidan knew it was only a matter of time before something wrong happened and the family was thrown into some form of chaos again. Hopefully no one would die, and it would just be a minor thing. He wasn’t too sure of that though, it never seemed to be a minor thing when it came to the family.

Aidan was excited and nervous. With the kiss and profession of love he knew he had to do this now or he’d get too anxious about it. Once they were in the right spot Aidan pulled the ring out of his pocket and got down one knee. It wasn’t often Galen was the one standing while Aidan was down on his knee. A knight was rarely above his prince but here it was. The silver band in his hand held out to the other. ”Galen Quigley, will you marry me if we can ever get married?” Aidan’s heart belonged to the other. It had for a long time. He had known that Galen was the one he wanted and had he been a woman or Galen was a woman this wouldn’t have had to be n secret. Yet, it was for now.

Galen was the worrier. However, that was part of his job. He had been Aidan’s personal guard since he graduated from the academy at 18. They’d been through a lot together, both as friends and as a couple. Even if their relationship was secret, they still suffered together and here in Malthandia, people suspected their true bond. Though, Galen had never confirmed nor denied it. Even so, his job was to worry and so he did. He worried about this news. He worried what it might be and who it might involve. He worried for their wards, well Aidan’s wards legally, Desmond and Xerxes. He just worried.

Still, relief flooded through him as Aidan confirmed that it would be good and they needed good. The latter part of Aidan’s words actually made stoic Galen chuckle. That was rare, but Aidan could always make it happen. He could always make Galen smile or laugh, while not many could. “That is realistic.” Galen stated, knowing it was true. At the rate the Charming family was going, the guards would never be out of a job. It seemed that every good event followed a bad and every bad followed a good. The Charming princes could not simply have good things. No. The good always came with bad in some way, be it before of after. So, Aidan’s statement was realistic and Galen didn’t doubt it was far off.

Still, he watched Aidan carefully, his love’s behavior confusing the guard. What Aidan did next left the stoic guard speechless. He had not expected THIS to be the news. He hadn’t expected THIS to be why they were out here. Yet, Aidan was on one knee before him and Galen felt tears stinging his eyes as he looked at the man he loved, so willing to give him whole heart and his life to Galen, just as Galen was willing to do the same for him.

“Do you even need to ask?” Galen responded, his words coming out in a choked up, emotional manner that he was not accustomed to. “Yes, I will marry you if we are ever allowed. I love you, Aidan, you know this. I have always loved you. I wish we could marry, but I understand why it is, IF we ever can.” He understood their situation was complicated. It was not the typical case of marriage between a man and woman. It did not provide any strategic alliances. He understood. Still, if permitted he would happily marry Aidan. He would be honored. “Now, please get up….I should never be above you, love.”
