    the provinces

    Solbergens ~ the capital province

    Location: Western Central
Terrain: Mountains, Arable farmland, Meadowland, Woodland, High amount of settlements
Trades: Trading, Agriculture, Stonemasonry (lesser extent), Lumber (lesser extent)
Governor: Queen Rose Charming and King Declan Charming, Duchess and Duke of Solbergens
    Description:
The capital province of Soest, named after the house of the royal family. It is a landlocked area found in western central Soest. This province has the largest population by far and contains the most settlements, including the capital town where the Palace of Solberg is situated. A lot of market trading occurs in the capital and the province's other large towns but the surrounding areas are filled with farmed land, making agriculture one of the province’s main trades. Its climate is mild and for the most part dry, conditions being harsher the further north traveled. From its source in the Schnee mountain range, the River Eider runs through northern Solbergens before crossing into Hochkuste, with a section even flowing right through the palace gardens. There are mountains to the far north where the province stretches into the Schnee mountain range and the stone industry also operates to a small extent here. The rest of the land is filled with meadows and woods, meaning there is also a small lumber trade.

    Neuenstetten ~ the market province

    Location: Eastern Central
Terrain: Arable farmland, Woodland, Quarryland, High amounts of settlements
Trades: Quarrying, Trading, Agriculture, Lumber (lesser extent)
Governor: Princess Daisy Hähnsen, Duchess of Neuenstetten
    Description:
Lying to the east of Solbergens in eastern central Soest, this province also has no access to the coast. This province is the only other to be heavily populated and the number of settlements is close but second to Solbergens. Of all of the provinces, Neuenstetten is the most renowned for its market towns, with a large amount of Soest’s internal trade passing through these settlements on market days. Its climate is mild and dry, though increasingly harsh the further north travelled, and the River Saale runs down the centre of the province, from its source in the mountains to where it meets the River Regen at Allerthal’s northern borders, forming the great River Aller. This province’s main trades are in agriculture, due to the area being filled with arable farmland, and quarrying, due to the land’s geology, having the largest export of raw quarry material of all the provinces. The province also has plentiful woodland and there is a small lumber trade.

    Schneeberg ~ the mountain province

    Location: Northern
    Terrain: Mountains, Coniferous forest
    Trades: Lumber, Stonemasonry
Governor: Prince Frederic Hähnsen and Princess Adelaide Hähnsen, Duke & Duchess of Schneeberg
    Description:
Occupying all of Northern Soest, this province is the largest in area, with its western edge meeting the coast. The region is incredibly mountainous, with conifer forests covering large areas at lower altitudes, and contains many lakes, with the largest rivers in Soest; the Eider, Saale & Regen, finding their sources high in the mountains here. Its climate is the most extreme of Soest’s provinces due to its northern position, with the winters being especially harsh. This province is a prosperous one despite the often hostile conditions, with the two main trades being masonry and lumber, though the work can be incredibly dangerous during the winter months.

    Hockuste ~ the fishing province

    Location: North Western
    Terrain: Coastline, Mountains, Coniferous forest
Trades: Fishing, Trading, Lumber (lesser extent), Stonemasonry (lesser extent)
Governor: Princess Poppy Hähnsen, Duchess of Hochkuste
    Description:
Located in north west Soest, this province’s western edge hugs the coastline. The vast access to the sea has made the fishing trade in Hochkuste extensive, with fishing villages lining the coast. The province for the most part has a mild, wet climate and is moderately populated. Through its southern lands, the final stretch of the River Eider runs before it reaches the sea at the Hochkuste coast. To the northern reaches of the province, the Schnee mountain range can be found so northern Hochkuste has a much harsher climate but also contains a small masonry and lumber trade. The long stretch of coastline also caused this province to be responsible for the largest trading of good externally with vast amounts of imported and exported material passing through its ports and harbours daily.

    Niederkuste ~ the marsh province

    Location: South Western
    Terrain: Coastline, Marshland
    Trades: Fishing
Governor: Princess Petunia Hähnsen, Duchess of Niederkuste
    Description:
With this south western land being predominantly made up of saltmarshes, the province has the lowest economic value of any in Soest and is also the most sparsely populated. A large proportion of the land is regularly inundated with salt water, making the land difficult to farm or settle permanently in. It does however, similarly to Hochkuste, have a large potential for the fishing trade due to its western coastline but its sister province to the north is preferred due to its stabler land. Fishing is still Niederkuste’s main trade however and the hardy folk who choose to permanently live and work in this province have learnt to cope with the terrain.

    Regenwalde ~ the forest province

    Location: North Eastern
    Terrain: Coniferous forest, Hills, Quarryland
    Trades: Lumber (extensively), Quarrying
Governor: Princess Frieda Forstner and Prince Ulfric Sr. Forstner, Duchess & Duke of Regenwalde
    Description:
Situated to the east of Neuenstetten in north eastern Soest, this province is covered in coniferous forest and hence contains by far the largest lumber trade in Soest. The River Regen, named after the land, runs through the province, running from its source in the Schneeberg mountains to where it meets the River Saale at Allerthal’s northern borders, forming the great River Aller. Settlements are few and far between but the province is moderately populated, residents living for the most part in singular households in the forests rather than in established villages. It has the wettest climate in the kingdom, with the greatest snowfall in winter months, but temperatures are mild in comparison to more northerly parts of Soest. The large forest stretches over land filled with rolling hills and lies on rich rock beds, leading to areas of forest being cut away to make space for quarrying in the province, the second largest of Regenwalde’s trades.

    Allerthal ~ the valley province

    Location: South Eastern
Terrain: Very arable farmland, Hills, Meadowland
    Trades: Agriculture (extensively)
Governor: Prince Ulfric Jr. Forstner and Princess Magdalena Forstner, Duke & Duchess of Allerthal
    Description:
A large river valley takes up the majority of the area in this south eastern province, carved over centuries by the River Aller, the largest river in Soest which is fed into by both the River Saale and River Regen. The congruence of the two rivers in fact marks the northern boundary of the province. The rest of the land is made up of rolling hills, stretching south from Regenwalde, covered in wild meadowland or arable farmland, the province being famous for its farms and flowers. Allerthal has the most fertile soil in Soest, its fertility maintained by the silt deposited with the River Aller’s annual winter flooding, when the valley floor residents migrate up to the valley top until the flood waters have receded. Due to this, Allerthal contains the largest agriculture in the kingdom and this is also aided by the province having the warmest climate in Soest with regular rainfall.
